Must-Know Regional Blocks in 2023: An “Ask the Expert” Hands-on Workshop

Optimization of pain control while minimizing side-effects from opioid medications is one of the core elements of enhanced recovery. Perioperative opioid use is a leading cause of long-term opioid misuse and addiction, and clinicians need alternative tools to provide high-quality, safe and effective post-surgical pain relief, as outlined in the Non-Opioids Prevent Addiction in the Nation (NOPAIN) Act 2022. This workshop will focus on high-impact fascial plane and peripheral nerve blocks as well as other novel therapies such as cryoanalgesia that have been shown to reduce or eliminate the need for perioperative opioid medications. Attendees will be taught using a unique combination of didactics, hands-on facilitated scanning, and a learner-directed ask-the-expert live demonstration session.

This workshop focuses on the regional anesthesia techniques, and tips and tricks that learners REALLY want to know about abdominal, thoracic, breast, spine, and joint replacement surgery, and includes two exciting teaching strategies:

  1. Demonstration and hands-on scanning practice of the following “hot and must-know” blocks in clinical practice in 2023:
    1. Pericapsular Nerve Group (PENG) Block for hip and acetabular surgery
    2. External Oblique Intercostal Fascial Block for upper abdominal/gastric/ hepatobiliary surgery
    3. PECS Blocks for breast/chest wall surgery
    4. Erector Spinae Plane (ESP) Block for thoracic surgery and lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine procedures
    5. Rectus Sheath blocks for midline abdominal procedures
  2. “Ask-the-expert”. In this exciting segment, attendees determine the agenda by asking the expert faculty to demonstrate the block techniques live. Heard about a new block and want to see the sonoanatomy demonstrated on a live model? Got a question about challenges you are facing when performing a certain block? Want to incorporate cryoanalgesia into your practice? Ask our expert panel of faculty to show you how quickly and easily, and then practice that scanning technique on a live model with expert feedback and instruction.

  • 3:10-4:00 = Hands-on Facilitated Scanning Practice on Live Models
  • 4:00-5:00 = Ask-the-Expert Live Demonstration and Scanning Practice of Additional Techniques Including Cryoanalgesia

 Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the rational use of targeted ultrasound guided fascial plane and nerve blocks with a focus on same-day discharge
  • Describe the indications, strengths, and limitations for various fascial plane blocks of the chest wall and abdomen
  • Discuss the indications and best-practice recommendations for use of cryoanalgesia in the perioperative setting
  • Design a comprehensive, balanced pain management plan that minimizes opioid-related adverse effects and facilitates rapid recovery from surgery and anesthesia
